About Natural Latex Mattresses

Like their name suggests, natural latex mattresses are made from natural latex, a milky substance which is harvested from the rubber tree (Hevea brasiliensis). This tree which is also the most important source of natural rubber is native to the Amazon Rainforest but the latex collection process known as rubber tapping does not harm the tree, while most of latex is obtained from plantations in south and south-east Asia rather than the Amazon Rainforest. By choosing a natural latex mattress, you are therefore not jeopardising the world’s largest rainforest nor contribute to deforestation.

When searching for a natural latex mattress, it is highly important to pay attention to the word “natural” because it is also possible to find latex mattresses. These, however, are not made from latex that is collected from the rubber tree but from synthetic latex. It may look like natural latex but it does not feel like natural latex which provides a superior orthopaedic support needed for quality sleep and rest. Other advantages of natural over synthetic latex as well as other common materials for mattresses such as memory foam include resistance to mould, mildew, dust mites and bacteria, hypoallergenic properties and exceptional durability. Natural latex mattresses provide an excellent support and comfort up to three decades. They are also breathable and reduce perspiration.

In addition to natural and synthetic latex mattresses, and mattresses which are made from a combination of both natural and synthetic latex, there are also different types of natural latex mattresses – Talalay and Dunlop latex mattresses. The main difference between the two types of latex is their processing and firmness/softness of the mattresses. Both are a good choice and provide all the benefits of natural latex but which one will work better for you depends on how firm or soft mattress you sleep better as mattresses made from Talalay are slightly softer than those made from Dunlop latex. However, keep in mind that there are several firmness categories and make sure that your bed base frame is in good shape because a latex mattress needs a strong and quality foundation.

Finding a 100% natural latex mattress, unfortunately, is not as easy as it may seem at a first glance. Although you would normally expect that a 100% natural latex mattress is exactly what is sounds to be, this is not necessary the case. A 100% natural latex mattress may be made from all natural latex but there is no guarantee that the entire mattress is made from natural latex. In addition to natural latex, it can also contain other materials including synthetic ones.

If you really want all natural latex mattress, buy a mattress from a reputable brand at a reputable store and demand from the salesman to tell you exactly from which materials the mattress is made. It is also a good idea to buy from a company/store that offers a trial period and money back guarantee, especially if you are considering buying a latex mattress online.
